Loosing Track of time at The Caves

A visit to The Caves resort was one of our highlights during the recent stay in Negril, Jamaica. This unique gem is perched above and built into Negril’s steep cliff and cave side.

A narrow road winds along the coast directing us to the resort, making it easy to miss the hidden entrance. A small light blue gate, just big enough for a mini-bus, is the only entrance at the resort, which is hidden behind walls. The driveway is so small that there is hardly enough space to turn your car. The lobby consists of a small, two-story building with a blue fenced in front porch; nothing fancy, just pure Jamaican country charm. It’s like arriving at a friend’s home.

As we arrive, the hotel sales executive was the first to provide us with a warm Jamaican greeting. Filled with pride and excitement, he escorted us on a small winding path to show us the highlights of the property. The stone path leads us through beautiful gardens, which guide us to a few unique cottages. We then approache Macka Tree; right below is a giant carved-out bluehole where visitors can jump into, at their own risk. The bluehole directs the swimmer to a cave that soon approaches the wide open Caribbean Sea.

As we move further, we walk towards the edge of the cliff that leads to a small spa. The spa is very discreet, but incredibly beautiful with remarkable service to satisfy your needs.

Our tour continues by walking along the cliff’s edge again. We climb down a steep staircase towards the cave structures. Small terraces approach, and lead us to the first cave that invites guests to lounge and sunbathe while viewing the ocean below. Inside the cave it was so peaceful and secluded that it felt like the property was yours. The first cave was designed for guests to dine in private. At night, the inside of the cave fills your sight with beautiful candles and the sound of waves crashing below.

The second cave is a Rum and Cigar bar; a unique feature to Negril, which again at night becomes lit with candles and small lights. The bar invites guests to lounge in relaxing benches and enjoy a large selection of different rums and cigars. A warm evening breeze sways through the cave as the peaceful sound of crashing waves encircle it.

The last cave was also unique. A hot tub is built into the cave and opens up to the sea through a window. From there you can watch the sunset and toast a glass of champagne.

The Caves Resort treats their guests as if they were family. It is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. Guests enjoy cooling off in the deep blue sea by either jumping or climbing down a ladder. An inviting small pool that is above sea level allows visitors to relax while overlooking the breathtaking view of the ocean. Guests enjoy participating in snorkeling and kayaking, a favorite pastime activity at the Caves. There is also a variety of food to choose from that is cooked to your liking.

Feel free to check out the pictures we took during our visit! The Caves can be a wonderful option for a honeymoon, relaxing getaway, or a destination wedding.

2010 Honeymoon Trends in the Wabash Valley

More wedding bells will be ringing in the Wabash Valley as we slowly approach the warm summer months. As the bride to be and her bridesmaids entered the St. Mary of the Woods bridal expo one could see the excitement peeling from their eyes. Filled with enthusiasm about planning the special day; the bride strives to make the wedding she has been dreaming about since she was a little girl come to life. Finding the dream dress, selecting the perfect shade of vibrant flowers, choosing a stunning wedding cake…, and finding the perfect destination for the honeymoon.

As the brides and a few fiancés visited our honeymoon booth we asked them about their dream honeymoon destinations. Our research showed that the most desired locations for Wabash Valley couples this summer are the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico. Most of the couples are looking for an all-inclusive experience.

Despite the economic downturn, newlyweds are still willing to spend more on their honeymoon than on a typical vacation. They want their honeymoon experience to be romantic, exotic, and oftentimes unique. And, they are willing to spend a little bit extra to make their dreams come true.

The Caribbean was the number one honeymoon destination mentioned amongst brides; despite the fact that many of the couples are getting married during the summer months which, after all, are considered to be hurricane season for these islands.

Each Caribbean island offers its own unique personality. Some of the most popular islands among Wabash Valley brides are Jamaica, St. Lucia and the Dominican Republic. Offering a slow-pace and relaxing environment, beautiful white sand beaches and clear turquoise blue ocean these islands charm many couples into wanting to spend the most important vacation of their lives there.

The Aloha spirit cannot be found anywhere but in the beautiful islands of Hawaii. The inviting nature of Hawaiians offers a warm and friendly atmosphere provided by the locals the moment you step off the airplane. The tall volcanic shaped mountains along with the pleasant trade winds create a contrast in the climates throughout the islands. In Hawaii, you’ll find rainforest jungles, fields of dry grasslands, and beaches with snow-capped mountains. The islands offer miles of diverse and rewarding hiking trails. Each of them has its unique charm and couples are bound to find one that reflects their desires.

Lastly, despite all the bad press Mexico remains a great honeymoon hotspot. Mexico is known for impeccable adult only all-inclusive resorts, white sand beaches, turquoise blue water and excellent food make it one of the most popular destinations.

This survey shows the most popular destinations among engaged couples in the Wabash Valley; however each of them is unique and is looking for an experience that reflects their personality. Whether they want to simply relax and romance, or are interested in a cultural experience in Europe, All About Honeymoons is committed to make their dream come true and create the experience of a lifetime.

January Happenings

Beaches Negril JamaicaI am on my way to St. Louis airport from where we will be flying out to Jamaica for a week of family vacation at Beaches Negril. January has proven to be a very interesting month. It started off with a wonderful bridal show at St. Mary-of-the-Woods during which we had the opportunity to meet many of Wabash Valley’s brides. It was particularly exciting because we actually sponsored the honeymoon give-away and were able to award the grand prize during the show.

Another highlight of the month is our new intern. Tricia joined our team just on time for the bridal show and she has been working on several projects ever since. One project she is particularly excited about is helping us take our Twitter honeymoongal account to new heights. She is also working on a blog post relating to the current honeymoon trends in the Wabash Valley.

Once back at the office we helped planning numerous exciting trips.

Ireland beautiful landscapesSarah & Mark are going to Ireland this March. They will be traveling from Dublin to Kilkenny, and then along the West Coast back to Dublin. What I think is particularly wonderful about their trip is the combination of accommodations. Most of the time they will be staying at small B&B’s which will allow them to interact with the locals and experience Irish living at its best. We have also integrated a night at Ashford Castle, one of Ireland’s 5* historic castles, a Leading Hotel of the World, which will be the highlight of their trip. Personally I can’t wait for the two of them to get back and share their experiences and photos.

Jonathan & Britny will be spending their 1st Anniversary at Excellence Riviera Cancun in Mexico this fall. After a wonderful honeymoon in Jamaica last year they were looking for something slightly different this time. If you ask me, there is a good chance that their 1st Anniversary trip will top the actual honeymoon. Not only are they staying at a wonderful resort, but they have also chosen an oceanfront suite in the Excellence’s VIP room category. The VIP hotel section creates a feeling of a smaller hotel within the larger resort. They have a private beach section, private pool and lounge, and the rooms offer additional amenities. They will be enjoying breakfast on their balcony overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Not to mention the wonderful Anniversary package the Excellence resort has to offer. They will definitely be in for a treat!

Iberostar Grand Rose Hall Beach Lindsey & Gary will be going on their honeymoon in September. After taking a cruise along the Mexican Riviera last year they decided to honeymoon in Jamaica. The Iberostar Grand will offer the perfect setting for an unforgettable stay. Marble columns and floors, Moroccan inspired design, Butler and Concierge service, several gourmet restaurants are only a few of the perks that await them. Lindsey has chosen a Peacock feather décor for her wedding and I think the interior design of this hotel will be right along her line. The Iberostar Grand is located in Rose Hall close to Montego Bay. Rose Hall is also home to Rose Hall Great House, former home of the White Witch who is said to still haunt this place. Above the Plantation House towers Ritz Carlton’s White Witch golf course and club house. From there you have stunning views over the coast.

The Miller family will be traveling Jordan and Egypt. Mrs. Miller and her 7 year old daughter will be joining her husband in Amman, Jordan. Since Mr. Miller has been living in Iraq for the last couple of years, he is very “at home” in the area. They will be renting a car, heading South, visiting sites such as Petra and Al Aqaba. After about a week they will be flying to Cairo where they will be exploring the Egyptian Museum and flock around the bazaar. We will be headed to Egypt ourselves in April, and I am really looking forward to hearing back from them.

Roman honeymoonBrooke & Matt will start their honeymoon early June. They have decided to travel Italy and we have put together a wonderful itinerary for them. They will fly into Venice from where they then travel to Florence. Whilst in Florence they will also visit Tuscany including Siena and San Gimignano (one of my personal favorites). They will taste local wine whilst visiting a vineyard. From Florence they will travel on to Rome. Their Roman hotel is located very close to the Trevi Fountain and I am sure they will be tossing some coins and make a wish while there. The couple will end their honeymoon with a few days of relaxation along the Amalfi Coast. Brooke & Matt are going to have an absolutely marvelous time! We have created a trip that allows them to travel independently without having to worry about anything. They just have to follow the itinerary and show up. A true no brainer.

Surf Simulator at Beaches Turks & CaicosThe Hoang family will be spending a week of their summer vacation at Beaches Turks & Caicos. They will be traveling with their two children and a friend, all of them in their Tweens/Teens. With everything this resort has to offer, the kids are bound to have the time of a life. My guess is that their parents will hardly ever see them which will allow them to romance on their private beachfront terrace located in the brandnew Italian Village, indulge in spa treatments and simply relax.

As you can see, we have been busy. These are just a few of the trips we have planned and we look forward to helping more clients with their travel plans. But for now we are off to Jamaica. Whilst this is mainly a family vacation I am also planning on visiting the Rockhouse Hotel as well as The Caves. These are two boutique luxury hotels located in Negril. I am also planning on taking an excursion into Jamaica’s South incl. climbing the YS Falls and a ride on the Black River. Stay tuned for more!

Honeymoon Planning – Questions you should ask

A couple more hours before the new year! With the start of 2010 comes the beginning of the bridal season. Hundreds of brides will flock to wedding shows all over the world, shopping for wedding vendors, and also starting to think about their honeymoon.

Each wedding vendor has a certain set of questions a bride might want to ask before hiring them. Typically you might question a photographer about their package prices, how fast they will have your pictures available, how easy it will be for your guests to order from them, how much experience they have shooting weddings, and much more.

Whilst most every wedding vendor has a certain set of questions they will be asked, I oftentimes notice that brides do not qualify the honeymoon planner/travel consultant they want to work with. Here are a few ideas/tips/questions you might want to
use when selecting your honeymoon consultant.

  • If you have an idea on where you would like to go on your honeymoon, tell the consultant. Use this opportunity to test their reaction. Are they simply acknowledging your choice, or do they actually seem knowledgeable about the destination.
  • Who is going to do the work, you, or the consultant. By that I mean, does the consultant simply hand out brochures, or does the consultant setup an appointment with you first, in order to learn exactly what it is you are looking for?
  • What type of travel is the consultant’s specialty? Do they cater to anyone, including family & business travel, or do they specialize in the romance travel sector.
  • Does the consultant travel frequently and has first-hand experience in some of the most popular honeymoon destinations and resorts?
  • Is the honeymoon consultant going to be there for you, not only during the booking process, but also once you travel?
  • And, can you relate to the consultant. Do you feel this person will be able to understand what it is you are looking for.
  • Many of my All About Honeymoons colleagues will be represented at bridal shows nationwide. I encourage you to visit their booth (look for the logo), and submit them to the test.

Just like your wedding, your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime event. It should be the best vacation you ever take. You should feel special, you should know what to expect, and most of all, you should be able to treasure those memories forever.

Couples Sans Souci, Jamaica – Review of a Romantic Getaway

Mid April 2009 my husband and I were treated to 3 incredibly romantic nights at Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios. “Sans Souci” is French and when translated into English means “Without a Care” or “No worries” which is a cute way to refer to Jamaica’s famous tag line.

Sans Souci is a very special resort in that it is built around a mineral spring said to have healing powers. From the turn of the century, people from the small fishing village of Ocho Rios would congregate on Sundays, lining up for the whole day, to take their 15 – 20 minute turn in the mineral spring which is particularly good for rheumatism, arthritis, and skin problems. Nowadays you have the possibility to bath in these healing waters during a stay at Couples Sans Souci.

Ocho Rios has a very rugged coastline with rocky hillsides and small bays. Sans Souci was originally built along the hillside running down to the mineral springs. It was setup to become one of the Caribbean’s most luxurious beach-side complexes. In 1966 the property was bought by a Bermudian who was truly impressed by the “tropical beauty” of the place. On viewing the site with its steep elevation, Mr. Ward, the architect, remarked that it was an “exciting challenge” to his architectural skill. This was the beginning of Sans Souci, which as such opened its doors in 1984.

Today Sans Souci is a truly unique property which embraces its history. You can feel the love the different owners had for this place.

In 2005 Couples resorts bought Sans Souci, the Jewel of the Caribbean, situated on a high bluff of land. The property entails approximately 35 acres with terraced gardens leading down to the Spa. At the west end of the property within a small bay is a 400 foot sand beach.

    Couples Swept Away
The resort is just off the main road so no long driveways or anything alike. You check-in at a desk in the lobby area where you also find the tour desk and the resort concierge. Check-in is fairly painless but the fun starts when the bellman tells you how to find your room. Sans Souci is small but pretty complicated and you can easily get lost within the small walkways (particularly on the day of your arrival).

We were allocated a suite in the D block which sits high on a bluff. We really enjoyed our suite which was large with absolutely gorgeous views. The most unusual feature was the shower which after having stayed there for a couple of days is still a mystery to me. I guess some people just have more imagination than others.

We arrived fairly late in the afternoon and we quickly learned that it wasn’t all that easy to get reservations at one of the specialty restaurants. We ended up getting a late reservation at the beach restaurant which serves Caribbean inspired fare. The setting was really gorgeous. Right at the beach, the tree lighted with small lights – it couldn’t have been more perfect. The food was very good and it was interesting to discover the different tasting foods.

The next day we signed up for snorkeling which was no problem at all. The site we stopped at was fine but for someone who snorkeled the Great Barrier reef it wasn’t all that exciting. Other people on the boat told us that they sometimes take you to see a wreck which is pretty interesting.

Couples Sans Souci also has a great spa with very cute spa huts that are really romantic for couples massages… Since our time was limited I only tried a facial and it was very nice.

That evening we dined outside on the hilltop terrace at the Italian restaurant which turned out to be more Caribbean than Italian really. Again, the food was great and the setting truly romantic.

Nighttime entertainment is fun but it is by no means a party resort. It’s all about celebrating your love, rekindle the romance…some fun games, karaoke and a lot of cuddly dancing.

Our last day they organized the Gala Dinner which they do once a week. They spend the whole day setting up tables, food stations, decorating… just for an evening. The buffet and selection was great and it was nice interacting with other guests. For those who did not like to socialize the only other option available was room service, which by the way is available 24 hours a day and included.

Couples Sans Souci is a great resort if you are looking for a romantic place, something unusual with a Caribbean feel.

    Beaches Turks & Caicos

The Turks & Caicos Islands, a British Dependent Territory comprising 40 islands and cays, lie at the southeastern end of the Bahamas chain, 575 miles southeast of Miami and 90 miles north of the island of Hispaniola.

Arriving at Providenciales (Provo) airport is very special. Provo is the largest and most developed of the Turks & Caicos Islands. The airport is very small, no buzz but warm and welcoming smiles upon arrival. Only 12 days of rain per year make for a very dry climate and vegetation is scarce. Since most everything on the island is imported it is a very expensive place. For example a gallon of milk costs approx. US$ 8.00.

The drive to Beaches takes about 20 minutes. Along the way you will see houses and strip malls. What will strike you the most when you enter the gates to Beaches are the lush tropical gardens. The owners of Beaches have taken great care into bringing many beautiful plants to their resort so that it will truly look tropical and gorgeous.

    Beaches Turks & Caicos

Beaches Turks & Caicos is split into three sections which are all very different. The Italian Village is the newest addition. The resort offers 16 restaurants, 13 bars, a wonderful waterpark catering to little ones as well as older children and adults with some great water slides and a surf simulator. As an all-inclusive resort, Beaches Turks is truly an all-rounder. It is a great place for families, destination weddings, larger family getaways… Anyone will find something to do, and no one will feel left out.

The beach is white sand with crystal clear turquoise blue water. Since the resort is large you will always find a quiet area or nook if you are not too much into action. There are 3 large pools, numerous swim-up bars and much more. At night there is Club Liquid which is available to children and adults until 10pm, and after that adult only. There are several adult only restaurants and bars, incl. karaoke bar and mock casino gaming. Smaller children will be entertained by the Sesame Street day and evening programs.

Whilst you can book Sandals resorts online I strongly recommend using a travel professional, preferably a Sandals certified specialist (such as us). There are several reasons for that.

One being that not all resorts are created equal and that there is a reason why some price higher than others. Also, not every resort is for everyone. In Beaches Turks’ case you also have the choice between three villages which ultimately are very different.

Sandals also has numerous room categories and finding the right one for you can be very confusing.

Another reason not to hesitate to use a travel professional is that Sandals offers a Best Price Guarantee, meaning that no one, not even the booking engine, can offer a different price on their product. What does that mean for you? You can get the expert advice without worrying about price. No matter where you book, it will always be the same.

Sandals Royal Bahamian – a review

Sandals Royal BahamianIt’s early morning and we are taking off from rainy and cool St. Louis airport. Our direct flight to Nassau takes about 2 1/2 hours after which we land at Nassau’s airport.

The airport seems understated for such a popular and booming island, not what I would have expected. Once through security we quickly find our way to the Sandals desk from where we are guided to our transfer. Sandals transfers most of their guests in minibuses however, if you are staying in one of the higher category suites, you are treated like a celebrity and taken to the resort by private Rolls Royce or Mercedes.

After a short 20 minute ride we arrive at the Sandals Royal Bahamian. A lush winding way leads towards the main entrance, which colored in light blue is strikingly beautiful.

At Sandals Royal Bahamian 9 restaurants, several bars and “Sandals Cay” (their private island) await. It is a small resort with beautiful, friendly people. At night fire pits set the tone and you can relax in lounge chairs scattered along the shore. The private island also offers a very romantic setting with additional dining options.

Sandals Royal Bahamian is a great place if you are looking for the ease of an adult-only all-inclusive resort. A short cab ride will take you to the casinos should you need the action :-) .

Those concerned about the environment will be happy to learn that this resort is Green Globe 21 certified.

7 Tips on how to handle flight cancellations and delays

Scheduled to come back home from Montego Bay, Jamaica Saturday, April 18, we made our way to the airport early morning at 9:30am for Continental flight #865 going into Houston at 2pm that day. Upon arrival at the airport we were told that the flight had been delayed for 4 hours because of bad weather in Houston. We realized right away that this would mean we were going to miss our connection to Indianapolis which was the last of the day. Since we were eager to get back we inquired whether there were any seats available on the Continental flight to Newark but were told that it was full.

So we decided to enjoy another jerk chicken at the airport and were happily munching our food right across the gate of the flight to Newark. People started boarding while we were rapping up our meal and by the time we had paid they basically had closed the gate. For fun we walked over and asked whether they had had any seats left on that plane and were told that in fact, there had been two empty seats (which we could have taken).

Tip 1: When you find out your flight is delayed because of bad weather and the airline agent tells you that there are no seats available on another flight, go to the gate and standby. Chances are, someone is not going to show and you can grab their seats.

Had we done that, we would have been home Saturday night as originally planned. Around 5pm, still at Montego Bay airport, we were told that the plane we were waiting for (which came from Houston) had still not been able to depart. They said that they would transfer all approx. 200 passengers to the Sunset Beach resort where we could relax and have a meal while waiting for the plane. They assured us that they would pick us up around 8pm same day for our flight back. It took us about 1 hour to get from the airport to the hotel which was actually located within 10 minutes from the airport. They literally made us check-in which meant another hour in line.

View from Sunset Beach Resort's room tower

View from Sunset Beach Resort's room tower

The hotel was basic, especially after having spent a week at the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall and Couples Sans Souci. A motel room at best however, the food was very decent and the ocean views great. Having a hotel management background I applaud the hotel for the fact that they were able to make 100 rooms available within an hour. To accommodate and feed 200 guests you were not really expecting is quite an accomplishment.

Tip 2: If you booked your flight with a travel agent, make sure to give them a call and see what they can do for you!

In this case I was the travel agent and figured I would be proactive. Theoretically we were scheduled to arrive into Houston around 2am. So I called Continental’s reservation desk to get us on the first flight out of Houston on Sunday morning. We were told that all flights from Houston to Indianapolis were sold out until Tuesday. Innocently I asked whether they were going to provide us with accommodation in Houston. They said that since the delay was weather related they could not take care of it. So I started asking for availability for flights to airports within driving distance of Indianapolis. We ended up finding one going into Lexington, KY the next morning. Since Lexington is about 3 hours away I also setup a rental car (which obviously was at our cost).

8pm and the buses to transfer us back to the airport are ready at the hotel. Everybody grabs a seat, anxious to finally get on a plane. Half way to the airport the driver’s phone rings. He is instructed to return all passengers to the hotel. Although the plane arrived in Montego Bay, Continental had decided to cancel the flight. 9pm back at the hotel. 200 people without luggage. Big invasion of the hotel’s gift shop where a toothbrush and a small tube of tooth paste cost $10.00. Cash preferably, since the credit card machine was not working. They told us to be ready at 6am for the transfer to the airport.

Tip #3: Don’t overdo it. At this point I had obviously realized that my preparation for the next day’s flight to Lexington had been in vain. Looking back at it, I would probably no longer try to take faith in my own hands before I am sure I am going somewhere. Also, since they had changed the original itinerary from Indianapolis to Lexington, our reservation was removed from the system which meant they were no longer confirming other options for us.

Come 6am everyone was in the lobby ready to hop on the transfer buses. To everybody’s surprise, our suitcases were waiting in the lobby as well. Somehow they had failed to inform us that our luggage was at the hotel and actually available to us. They had also failed to predict that 200 passengers plus their 400 suitcases would require more buses than originally planned. By 7:30am everyone was finally at the airport, ready to check-in for a flight that was scheduled to leave at 8:15am. As you can guess, it took an eternity to check-in 200 people all concerned about their connecting flights. We were literally last in line, and were very happy to hear that the plane would wait for us. At 9am we finally arrived at the gate and shortly after, the plane departed.

Finally, Houston. We were told to go through customs, get our luggage and proceed to the Continental service desk. Guess how long that line was? Lucky me, my husband has an Elite status which allows us to stand in the “VIP” line.

Tip #4: If you fly often, try to use the same airline in order to get a preferred status. In these situations it can help you do things regular passengers can’t.

But even there the line was very long, and it took an eternity for them to handle even one case. Looking for a way out we asked a Continental employee and she told us that although we shouldn’t we could exit and then re-enter and go to the service desk in the departure hall. Not much to lose we figured that was probably the best option.

The departure hall was jammed with people and we didn’t quite know where to go. We figured, let’s do the Elite Check-in counters. Obviously this is all electronic but we succeeded in grabbing one of the agents. It took her a while to understand what we actually wanted but at last she seemed to get the picture. She told us that the next flight available to Indianapolis was on Tuesday morning (here we were on Sunday morning) and we said there was no way. There was absolutely no availability, even on the surrounding area flights. However, the lady said we could always go stand-by for the flight to Indianapolis which was scheduled to depart two hours later. We said yes please and were put on the stand-by list. We were number 2 + 3.

Tip #5: Check flight availability and stand-by lists online at www.continental.com. It is also easy to get this information on your pda. There are certain rules to standing by. 1. you have to actually physically be at the airport, meaning you cannot ask to stand-by when still in Montego Bay. 2. there is a certain hierarchy. Elite members come before regular passengers, people who already stood-by but couldn’t get on rollover to the next flight and grab a higher position…

We headed over to security and once again, a huge line. Lucky us, the Elite status let us bypass all passengers and we were through security in less than 5 minutes. I then remembered that I still had some Continental President’s lounge access passes and after talking to the receptionist we decided to use them. Apart from drinks, they provide free wifi and a VIP customer service desk which proved to be very helpful.

Tip #6: You might have to pay for the access to the President’s lounge but it definitely offers its perks. If you want to use your laptop to research options you don’t pay for the access, whereas you have to pay everywhere else in the airport. If you are still reluctant to pay you might want to position yourself and your laptop close to the lounge. Who knows, you might just get lucky.

First thing we did is heading to the customer service desk. The lady said she was actually able to confirm one seat on the plane to Indy (obviously for the husband with Elite status), however, that the second person still had to standby. We grabbed the seat, well aware that we might eventually get separated. While sitting in the lounge I constantly checked my stand-by status and got bumped back to spot #5 by Elite members and rollovers.

We made it to the gate just before the actual boarding time and I was told I had to wait and see. My husband boarded the plane and with him everyone else. The desk person started calling the names of Standby #1, #2 and #3. They all showed. She called for #4 but the person wasn’t there. So little me, #5, took her spot.

Tip #7: Don’t get discouraged by a long stand-by list. A lot of things happen, especially when several flights have been canceled and people book and make reservations in all directions.

We got back to Indianapolis 24 hours after our originally scheduled arrival time. These are the main lessons I’ve learned:

If you are stranded someplace out of the country your first priority is to get back to the US. Once in the US your negotiating power is way better. What I found out later while reading Continental’s inflight magazine is that when they cancel a flight, they automatically rebook the passengers on the next available connection for their itinerary. Start of by trusting in that.

Once you get to the airport you might not be happy with their selection but now you can actually negotiate and stand-by.

Are Cancun and the Riviera Maya safe to travel to?

In a concern to diminish the harm done by negative press, the Karisma Resort management just published the following Questions & Answers for their specialist travel agents to reassure their customers:

Is it safe to visit the Riviera Maya and your properties?
    a. There have been no reports of incidents in the Riviera Maya, where El Dorado Spa
Resorts & Hotels and Azul Hotels by Karisma are located. The isolated, drug-related
incident that took place outside of Cancun earlier this month was more than 100
miles in the opposite direction of Riviera Maya, and did not involve everyday citizens
    or tourists.
    b. We have been reassured by the tourism ministry that Riviera Maya remains a safe
    tourist destination.
    c. Border towns including Chihuahua and Tijuana, which are the focus of such
violence, are more than 1,500 miles and 2,000 miles from Riviera Maya, respectively.

Wasn’t there a travel advisory cautioning travelers about popular tourist areas like
    Los Cabos and Cancun?

    a. No, the Mexico Tourism Board maintains that Mexico remains a safe tourist
destination, further reassuring that popular tourist destinations including Los Cabos,
Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and the Riviera Maya (where El Dorado Spa Resorts &
Hotels and Azul Hotels by Karisma are located), all remain safe for visitors.
    b. The U.S. Department of State also issued a travel alert warning U.S. citizens about
    dangers in border towns.

Are reports that the Cancun Airport has been taken over by the military true?
    a. Despite the proliferation of rumors, there are no formal reports indicating the
takeover of the Cancun Airport by military officials.

What are you doing to ensure the safety of current guests?
    a. We are committed to providing our guests with exceptional and memorable
experiences and their satisfaction is our top priority.
    b. El Dorado Spa Resorts & Hotels and Azul Hotels, by Karisma are closed to outside
persons. Further, we employ 24-hour security to help ensure the safety of our
    guests.
    c. Riviera Maya remains a safe tourist destination and because there have been no
reports of violent incidents in the area, we do not feel the need to increase security at
El Dorado Spa Resorts & Hotels and Azul Hotels by Karisma.

These statements are based on the following resources:
    Mexico Tourism Board
    U.S. State Department

In addition, Mandy Chomat, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Karisma Hotels & Resort also speaks out on behalf of the Riviera Maya and Mexico in an interview with Travel Agent Central.
